What happens if your job requires you to be on your feet quite a bit, but your feet tend to swell, your legs ache, or you can see obviously enlarged or twisted veins in your legs? These can be indications of poor circulation and weakness in the veins of the extremities. These large or twisted veins are called varicose veins. Approximately 10% of Americans have varicose veins by age 30! Pregnancy and obesity can greatly accelerate their development. If the varicose veins get worse, the capillaries can break and allow protein and fibrin to leak into the tissues, which really makes healing more difficult, so it behooves us to act at the first sign of varicosities.

Smaller but still unattractive blood vessels called spider veins appear most often on the legs, but also occasionally on the face. They can be short, unconnected lines, each about the size of a large hair, and they look something like a purple road map.

What causes these problems? Your heart beats strongly enough so that your blood flows out to all parts of your body, including down through the legs into the toes. How-ever, fighting gravity to return it to the heart is more challenging. The body accomplishes this recycling feat by using a system of valves, something like the locks in the Panama Canal. Your muscles contract and force the blood into the next chamber, which has to contain it there until it is once again forced to move upward by another muscle contraction. If these little movements fail, however, because the valves are unable to keep the blood from leaking back into a lower chamber, varicosities form and circulation is impaired.

What can be done? Exercise and proper weight control help tremendously. Activity causes the muscles to contract and helps the system work. Regular bowel movements must be encouraged to avoid constipation which puts additional stress on the veins. It is also important to avoid tight clothing, such as garters, that can constrict the upper leg. It is helpful to elevate your legs a bit by sitting in a recliner or by elevating them on a pillow in bed to help return the blood from the legs.
