Vinpocetine Vincamine is an alkaloid extracted from the periwinkle plant. Vinpocetine is created by making a slight modification to the vincamine molecule. Research has shown Vinpocetine to be the superior vinca alkaloid, usually having fewer, if any, side effects and more metabolic benefits. Do you find you have trouble remembering things lately? Things to buy when you get to the store? Where you put the car keys? What time you're supposed to be at an appointment? Even what day of the week it is?! Vinpocetine may well be a part of the solution to these memory failures. It has been referred to as a "smart pill"! Vinpocetine can improve circulation by helping blood vessels to naturally expand. This is especially important in the brain, where a dilation of vessels can help to improve brain metabolism! In addition to improving the blood flow, it appears to increase the rate at which the brain cells produce ATP, an energy biochemical. It also improves the brain's use of glucose and oxygen. The benefits it creates to blood flow help throughout the body, of course, but it is particularly useful to supporting neuronal reactions in the brain. Neurons differ from other body cells which can burn either glucose or fat for energy, in that neurons can only use glucose. And again unlike other body cells such as liver and muscle cells, neurons cannot store significant amounts of glucose. They are therefore dependent on a continuous supply coming from the blood to stay active and healthy. Most body cells replicate themselves routinely as we grow and then age; neurons, however, reach their maximum number at about the age of two and thereafter are never replaced. It is a serious thing to lose brain cells! There is some evidence that we experience many minor, unnoticed "cerebral incidents" during which the oxygen supply to our brain is diminished and the neurons have to adapt by switching from aerobic to anaerobic energy metabolism. When they do this, energy production can drop up to 95%! That creates symptoms such as memory impairment, occasional confusion, more difficulty in learning new things, and a lessened ability to concentrate. Eventually it can lead to a stroke, senility or dementia. There have been tests conducted with elderly people that have shown brain function results that were statistically better for testees taking Vinpocetine than for those taking a placebo. How does Vinpocetine work to help restore normal aerobic metabolism? Possibly it works by increasing the rate of ATP production, and/or by its effect on cerebral circulation. It also seems to contribute to a reduction in unnecessary platelet aggregation which can come about because of a high-fat diet, a deficiency of magnesium, or possibly from too much stress. Vinpocetine has all of these benefits and no evidence to date that there are any serious undesirable side effects! If you are over 40; if you have problems remembering things; if you are less alert than you used to be; if you have trouble concentrating; if you have risk factors for strokes or dementia; or if you just want to support optimal brain function, consider VMTI's powerful memory-enhancing Vinpocetine!
